Kelechi Iheanacho delivered a decisive performance as Celtic secured their place in the Scottish Cup final, defeating St Mirren 6-2 after extra time in a dramatic semi-final clash at Hampden Park.
Coming off the bench late in regulation time, the Nigerian forward made an immediate impact when it mattered most. With the match level at 2-2 after 90 minutes, Iheanacho struck in the 96th minute to restore Celtic’s lead before adding a second five minutes later, capping a dominant spell that saw the team score four goals in quick succession.
Luke McCowan and Benjamin Nygren were also on target during the extra-time surge, as Celtic overwhelmed their opponents to seal a comfortable victory.
The Glasgow side had earlier taken control of the match, going 2-0 up in the first half through goals from Daizen Maeda and Anthony Ralston. However, St Mirren responded strongly after the break, with Mikaël Mandron scoring twice to force the game into extra time.
Iheanacho’s introduction ultimately proved decisive, as his sharp finishing and attacking presence helped Celtic pull away in emphatic fashion.
The performance reflects a steady return to rhythm for the Super Eagles striker, who had struggled with injuries earlier in the season. He recently ended a lengthy goal drought with a crucial strike against Dundee FC and has now taken his tally to six goals in 16 appearances across all competitions.
Celtic will face Dunfermline Athletic in the final on May 23 as they aim to add another trophy to their collection.
Speaking after the match, Iheanacho thanked supporters for their backing and called for continued support ahead of the final.
We’re happy to go through to the final. We’re looking forward to it. Thank you for your support today, come out again for the final,” he said.
With confidence building and the final in sight, Iheanacho will be hoping to play a key role as Celtic chase silverware.
