Nigeria’s top-ranked tennis player, Daniel Adeleye, demonstrated strong composure under pressure to secure a hard-fought victory in the qualifying rounds of the ATP Challenger 50 tournament in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

The 19-year-old battled back after dropping the opening set to overcome France’s Elijah Sanogo in three sets, winning 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) in a tightly contested encounter at the Cofina Neemba courts. The result sends him through to the next stage of the qualifying draw.

Up next for Adeleye is Algeria’s Hamza Reguig, currently ranked 849 in the world, as he continues his push for a place in the main draw.

Adeleye’s performance in Abidjan follows a period of consistent activity on the international circuit, highlighted by his key contributions to Nigeria’s recent Davis Cup success earlier this year.

During the World Group II play-offs in Lagos, the young Nigerian played a decisive role in his country’s victory over Uzbekistan. After the opening matches left the tie evenly balanced, Adeleye delivered when it mattered most, first levelling proceedings with a straight-sets win in his singles rubber, and later returning to clinch the overall tie with another composed performance.

Nigeria had taken a crucial lead heading into the final singles matches after securing the doubles point, setting the stage for Adeleye to close out the contest and confirm progression.

That triumph ensured Nigeria’s place in the next phase of the Davis Cup, where they are scheduled to meet Morocco in September 2026. However, Adeleye’s participation in that fixture could depend on his commitments on the professional tour.

The ATP Challenger Tour, which hosts the Abidjan event, serves as a key pathway for emerging players seeking to climb the global rankings, with a packed 2026 calendar featuring over 150 tournaments across different prize categories.
