The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has rolled out a new directive aimed at strengthening the structure and inclusiveness of women’s football across the continent.

In a communication sent to its Member Associations, the continental football authority confirmed that every team participating in CAF-sanctioned women’s competitions must have at least one qualified female coach on its technical bench. Under the regulation, either the Head Coach or the Assistant Coach must be a woman, provided she meets the required coaching credentials for the role.

CAF made it clear that the female coach must possess the same certification and licensing standards applicable to the position, in line with its existing coaching regulations. The body emphasized that the policy is not symbolic but rooted in professionalism, insisting that competency and proper qualification remain central to all appointments.

The latest move forms part of CAF’s broader development agenda to deepen gender inclusion, improve technical standards, and expand leadership opportunities for women within African football. By ensuring female representation at the technical level, the governing body aims to create a stronger pathway for women transitioning from playing careers into coaching and administrative roles.

Member associations and participating clubs have been urged to comply with the directive ahead of upcoming continental tournaments, as CAF continues efforts to elevate the profile and competitiveness of women’s football across Africa.
