Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka delivered a commanding man of the match display as Coventry City secured a vital 2-0 away victory over West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns, strengthening their push for automatic EPL promotion in the Sky Bet Championship tie.
Coventry made a dream start, scoring with their first attack in the fifth minute. Frank Onyeka won possession in midfield to spark the move before Milan van Ewijk sent a long ball over the top. Ephron Mason Clark controlled it with his chest and lofted a clever lob over goalkeeper Max O’Leary. Although O’Leary got a hand to the effort, the ball looped beyond him and into the net, with Alfie Gilchrist unable to clear it off the line.
The visitors doubled their advantage in the 32nd minute through Jack Rudoni. The midfielder surged forward from inside his own half and unleashed a powerful strike from 25 yards that flew into the top corner. The goal capped a dominant first half display from Frank Lampard’s side and left the home supporters frustrated, with chants directed at head coach Eric Ramsay as Albion’s struggles continued.
West Brom offered little in response before the break, with their first attempt on goal arriving in stoppage time when Jed Wallace sent a weak effort wide. After the interval, the hosts showed more urgency and Alex Mowatt saw a low drive deflected off target, but Coventry remained organised and comfortable in defence to see out the win.
The result moves Coventry to 65 points and marks their first away victory since November 25, while West Brom remain in deep relegation trouble without a win under Ramsay and go four matches without scoring. Frank Onyeka second game for Coventry saw him play for 86 minutes before being replaced by Victor Torp. He completed 32 of his 44 passes, recorded 63 touches, made five recoveries and won five of his eight ground duels, earning the EFL player of the match award for his influential performance.
