Manchester United are reportedly considering disciplinary action against Lisandro Martinez after the defender publicly criticised the club’s leadership and recruitment following their 2 0 Champions League defeat by Atletico Madrid.
According to a report by The Athletic, United’s hierarchy are unhappy with Martinez’s comments. Club sources reportedly believe the defender could face a substantial fine for his post match outburst.
Martinez’s remarks have added to the pressure at Old Trafford following a difficult start to the campaign. Head coach Michael Carrick already faces scrutiny, and the defender’s public criticism has created another challenge for the club’s leadership.
The 28 year old reportedly continued to express his concerns during several television interviews. As a result, United are also considering dropping him from the starting line up for upcoming domestic fixtures as a disciplinary measure.
Martinez Faces Uncertain Future at Old Trafford
The dispute has raised fresh questions about Martinez’s long term future at Manchester United. The Athletic reported that the chances of him signing a new contract beyond his current 2027 deal now appear slim.
United hold an option to extend his contract until 2028. However, his reported breakdown in relations with senior executives could influence the club’s decision over his future.
A summer sale could offer United a chance to raise funds, while allowing his contract to expire remains another possible outcome. For now, his position at Old Trafford appears increasingly uncertain.
Beyond the dispute, Martinez’s comments have highlighted wider concerns about United’s recruitment strategy under Wilcox. The football director has faced a difficult period and previously clashed with former manager Ruben Amorim before his dismissal.
United’s transfer business has also attracted criticism. The club reportedly missed out on several key targets and chose not to sign another striker to support Benjamin Sesko, whose injury record has raised concerns.
Meanwhile, rivals Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea all outspent United in the recent transfer market. That gap has fuelled questions about whether the squad has enough depth and quality to compete consistently at the highest level.
Martinez’s outburst has therefore exposed tensions that go beyond one disappointing European result. United must now manage the disciplinary issue while addressing concerns about recruitment, squad balance and the club’s direction.
With his contract situation unresolved and relations with senior figures reportedly strained, the defender faces an uncertain future in Manchester.
