Nigeria international striker Taiwo Awoniyi is set to receive a three-match Premier League suspension following his straight red card in Coventry City’s 5-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, Trybal News reports.

Awoniyi was dismissed in the 53rd minute at the Coventry Building Society Arena after catching Brighton defender Maxim De Cuyper with his elbow during an aerial challenge.

The incident was reviewed by VAR, but the referee’s decision to send off the Nigerian striker was upheld.

The three-match suspension will come as a blow to Awoniyi, who only joined Frank Lampard’s Coventry side from Nottingham Forest this summer.

The 28-year-old has made three league appearances since his arrival, playing 181 minutes without finding the net.

It is Awoniyi’s first Premier League red card, with the striker having maintained a clean disciplinary record during his previous spell in the English top flight.
