Lamine Camara has spoken publicly about his failed deadline day move to Chelsea after the proposed transfer collapsed in the final hours of the window.
The Monaco midfielder emerged as a major target for Chelsea as the club looked to replace Enzo Fernandez.
Chelsea had already seen two bids for Camara rejected before eventually agreeing a €55m deal with Monaco.
However, the transfer fell apart late in the window after Monaco withdrew from the agreement.
The French club had expected to complete a separate £40m transfer that would have sent Folarin Balogun to Everton. That deal also collapsed, leaving Monaco unwilling to proceed with Camara’s departure.
As a result, Camara remained at Monaco despite the late possibility of moving to Stamford Bridge.
Lamine Camara Focuses on Monaco Future
Speaking at a press conference before Monaco’s clash with Strasbourg, Lamine Camara reflected on the hectic events surrounding the failed Chelsea transfer.
The midfielder admitted that the situation created a difficult moment, but he stressed the importance of remaining professional.
“It’s true that it was a hectic moment, but as you know, that is part of being a professional footballer. I tried to be professional and not think too much about it,” Camara said.
Lamine Camara also addressed questions about whether he wanted to leave Monaco. Rather than focus on the disappointment, he insisted that his attention has now returned to his current club.
“Did I want to leave? That makes you think that I wasn’t living in the present with the team. There was the possibility [of me joining Chelsea]. At the last minute, it didn’t happen […] if another chance [to leave for a big club] doesn’t come up, it is because I threw in the towel or didn’t work hard enough. Football moves quickly and maybe other chances will come. For now, I am focused on what I can bring and on the season at Monaco.”
Camara revealed that Monaco teammate Denis Zakaria also helped him regain his focus after the dramatic deadline day experience.
The failed move has nevertheless created frustration around the midfielder’s camp.
Camara’s agent, Diomansy Kamara, made his feelings clear in a post on Instagram. He criticised the way African players can sometimes have little influence over major decisions involving their careers.
“We have to get out of this logic where the African player can sometimes give the feeling that he is just a commodity: you buy it, you set its price, you negotiate its future and, too often, your will seems to go to the background,” Kamara stated. “Our African players deserve respect. The respect of their work. The respect of their career. Respecting their ambitions. The respect of their voices. A transfer shouldn’t just be a matter of two clubs and numbers. Behind every contract, there’s a man, a career, dreams and life choices.”
For now, Camara will continue his season with Monaco after his move to Chelsea failed to materialize.
The midfielder now has the chance to put the transfer saga behind him and concentrate on his performances for the French club. Meanwhile, Chelsea must continue without the player they had identified as a key option following Fernandez’s departure.
