Nigerian defender William Troost-Ekong has agreed to join Al Ahli SC of the Qatar Stars League from Saudi Pro League side Al Kholood, with a contract lasting until June 2028.
The 32-year-old centre-back, who previously captained the Super Eagles of Nigeria, is set to bring significant experience to Al Ahli’s defence after one and a half seasons with Al Kholood. During his time in Saudi Arabia, Troost-Ekong made 49 appearances and served as a key leader and captain for the club.
The transfer was confirmed by respected football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who reported that Troost-Ekong has agreed terms with the Qatari club and will formally complete the move in the coming days.
A New Chapter in the Middle East
Troost-Ekong’s move to Qatar comes after years of success across several leagues in Europe and the Middle East. The rugged centre-back began his senior career in the Netherlands before playing in Belgium, Turkey, Italy and England. He joined Al Kholood from Greek side PAOK in 2024.
International Career and Legacy
Off the pitch, Troost-Ekong announced his retirement from international football in December 2025, ending a decade-long career with Nigeria that included 83 caps and leadership at major tournaments, as well as recognition as one of the country’s most dependable defenders.
Al Ahli SC will be hoping Troost-Ekong’s leadership and defensive solidity can help the club compete for honours in Qatar’s top flight as well as in regional competitions. The long-term deal signals the club’s trust in his ability to contribute both on and off the pitch.
