The United States could hardly have asked for a better start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign. Backed by home support and driven by an aggressive attacking display, Mauricio Pochettino’s USA side cruised to a commanding 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their opening Group match.

While the scoreline reflected American superiority, the contest also revealed key lessons about both teams as the tournament begins to take shape.

Folarin Balogun Announced Himself on the World Cup Stage

Folarin Balogun delivered the performance of the night and confirmed why he remains one of the most important pieces in the United States attack on his World Cup debut.

The striker thought he had scored before the half-hour mark, only for the effort to be ruled out after an offside decision against Christian Pulisic in the build-up. Rather than allow the disappointment to affect him, Balogun responded in style.

He opened his account in the 31st minute when he fired into the bottom-right corner from a deflected Pulisic pass. Then, deep into first-half stoppage time, he produced an even better finish after Malik Tillman’s superb through ball released him behind the Paraguay defence.

Balogun held off Omar Alderete’s challenge before calmly finding the top-left corner. His brace placed him in exclusive company, becoming only the second American player to score multiple goals in a FIFA World Cup match after Bert Patenaude, who achieved the feat against Paraguay in 1930.

For a striker entering his prime years, it was the perfect statement performance on football’s biggest stage.

The USA Made History With an Explosive Start

The co-hosts immediately seized control of the contest and never allowed Paraguay to settle.

Their opening goal arrived after just six minutes and 48 seconds when Damian Bobadilla diverted Weston McKennie’s cutback into his own net. However, the move began with an excellent run from Christian Pulisic, who burst between two defenders to create the opening.

That strike entered the record books as the third-fastest goal scored by a host nation in its opening FIFA World Cup match. Only France in 1938 and Germany in 2006 scored earlier.

The Americans continued to attack with purpose and eventually carried a 3-0 lead into half-time for the first time in FIFA World Cup history. By the end of the night, they had also achieved another milestone by scoring four goals in a World Cup match for the first time ever.

Their 4-1 victory also marked only the third occasion the USA have won a FIFA World Cup game by three goals.

Christian Pulisic Pulled the Strings

Although Pulisic left the field at half-time, he had already done enough to shape the outcome of the match.

The AC Milan star constantly found space between Paraguay’s defensive lines and caused problems every time he received possession. He completed three dribbles, the joint-highest total in the first half, while also creating two chances.

Most importantly, Pulisic directly influenced two goals. His movement helped create the opening own goal, while his deflected pass set up Balogun’s first strike.

Including his assist in this match, Pulisic now has four goal contributions in FIFA World Cup competition, consisting of one goal and three assists. Among American players since 1966, only Landon Donovan has contributed to more World Cup goals.

His performance once again highlighted why he remains the creative heartbeat of this United States team

Paraguay’s Pragmatic Formula Finally Cracked

Paraguay arrived at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a clear identity.

Under Gustavo Alfaro, they rebuilt their fortunes after missing the previous three World Cups. The South Americans embraced a direct style built around defensive organisation, quick transitions and relentless work ethic.

That approach helped them lose only one of their final 12 qualifying matches after Alfaro’s appointment in 2024.

Throughout qualifying, Paraguay averaged just 37 percent possession, the lowest among South American nations. They also played forward quicker than any of their continental rivals and averaged the fewest passes per possession sequence.

The strategy proved effective during qualification, but the United States exposed its limitations. Paraguay struggled to contain the pace and movement of the American attack and found themselves in unfamiliar territory after conceding three goals before half-time.

Notably, they had not allowed three goals in a single CONMEBOL qualifying match. Against the United States, however, their defensive structure repeatedly came under pressure.

Experience and Youth Defined Both Teams

One of the most interesting contrasts of the match came through the team selections.

Paraguay fielded their youngest starting eleven at a FIFA World Cup since 1998, with an average age of 26 years and 347 days. The youthful lineup reflected a nation attempting to build for both the present and the future.

The United States took a different approach. Veteran defender Tim Ream led the side and became the oldest American player ever to appear at a FIFA World Cup at 38 years and 250 days.

At the same time, Pochettino’s starting lineup showcased the global reach of modern American football. For the first time in FIFA World Cup history, the USA named players from all five major European leagues in their starting eleven.

The balance between experience and elite-level club exposure gave the Americans an edge throughout the contest.

Paraguay did manage a consolation goal through substitute Mauricio in the 73rd minute after good work from Julio Enciso. Yet Giovanni Reyna delivered the final word in stoppage time with a stunning trivela finish that capped an impressive evening.

The statistics further underlined American efficiency. The United States scored four goals from an expected goals total of 1.35 while restricting Paraguay to just 0.47 xG.

For Mauricio Pochettino, the performance offered almost everything he could have wanted from an opening FIFA World Cup fixture. The USA attacked with confidence, created chances consistently and produced several historic achievements along the way.

Paraguay, meanwhile, must regroup quickly before their crucial meeting with Turkiye on June 19. After such an encouraging qualifying campaign, they now face an early test of character if they hope to keep their FIFA World Cup ambitions alive.
