Tobi Amusan will line up against some of the fastest women in the world when the women’s 100m hurdles take centre stage at the third leg of the Wanda Diamond League in Xiamen on May 23.
The race is shaping up to be one of the standout events of the meeting, bringing together an elite field that includes reigning Olympic, world and Diamond League champions, alongside current world record holders.
With six of the world’s top ten-ranked hurdlers confirmed, the contest is expected to provide an early indication of form in what has become one of the most competitive events in global athletics.
Fresh from her world title triumph, Ditaji Kambundji heads into the race as one of the leading contenders, returning to Diamond League action after her breakthrough gold medal performance in Tokyo last year. However, she faces stiff competition from Olympic champion Masai Russell, who set a new Diamond League record of 12.19 seconds in Silesia last season.
Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent will also be aiming to make a strong statement as she begins the defence of her Diamond League title, having claimed her maiden Diamond Trophy in Zurich.
Tobi Amusan, the world record holder over 100m hurdles with a time of 12.12 seconds and a three-time Diamond League champion, adds further star power to the field.
She will be joined by Devynne Charlton, the current indoor world record holder in the 60m hurdles, completing a line-up packed with global pedigree.
The Xiamen meeting is part of a strong early-season schedule in the Diamond League calendar, which begins in Doha on May 8 and concludes with the two-day final in Brussels on September 4 and 5. Alongside the hurdles, fans can also expect top-level competition in events including the men’s 100m, 400m, 5000m and the women’s 1500m, further underlining the depth of talent on display.
