Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) lifted the UEFA Super Cup for a second consecutive year after beating Aston Villa 2-1 on Wednesday, with Désiré Doué scoring the decisive goal in the annual curtain raiser to the European season.

PSG took control after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring in the 20th minute. The forward struck the ball with power to give the Champions League winners an early advantage.

Villa responded before half time through 17 year old striker Brian Madjo. He marked his competitive debut with a well taken volley, just days after FIFA cleared him to play following a dispute over his registration.

The game remained finely balanced after the break. Doué thought he had restored PSG’s lead in the 61st minute after running onto Ousmane Dembélé’s pass, but the officials initially ruled out the effort for offside.

A video review overturned the decision, allowing PSG to celebrate the goal and reclaim the lead. Villa could not find another response as the French side held on to secure another major European trophy.

The victory could prove the first of six possible trophies for PSG this season. Their latest success also makes them the first club to win back to back UEFA Super Cup titles since Real Madrid achieved the feat in 2016 and 2017.

The UEFA Super Cup brings together the reigning Champions League and Europa League winners. PSG entered Wednesday’s contest as European champions, while Aston Villa represented the Europa League after their own continental triumph.

PSG Star Hakimi and Artan make History

The final also carried a strong African connection. PSG captain and Morocco international Achraf Hakimi delivered another impressive performance across the full 90 minutes.

Hakimi recorded eight defensive contributions and 88 touches. He also completed 52 of his 59 passes and registered one shot as PSG secured the trophy.

Somali referee Omar Artan also created history during the match. UEFA selected him as the first African and first non-European referee to officiate the UEFA Super Cup.

Artan’s appointment added another landmark moment to his growing career. He had also earned selection for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but he could not attend after the United States denied him entry.

For PSG, however, the focus remained on another trophy. The victory over Aston Villa gives the club an early boost as they begin their pursuit of an unprecedented six trophy haul this season.
