Philip Otele marked a major milestone in his career after making his debut for the Super Eagles of Nigeria during the recent international friendlies, describing the moment as a lifelong dream finally realised.

The Hamburg winger was introduced late in Nigeria’s 2-2 draw against Jordan national football team, coming on for Frank Onyeka after missing the earlier 2-1 victory over Iran national football team.

Despite limited minutes, the appearance capped an emotional breakthrough for the 25-year-old, who had long set his sights on representing his country.

Speaking after the game, Otele reflected on the significance of the occasion, stressing that playing for Nigeria carries a deeper meaning beyond club football.

“For me, it was a dream come true. We always play football to represent the national team, so I always wanted to play for Nigeria, and it was a big moment for me and my family,” he said.

“I am proud of this moment. As a player, when you play for your national team, it gives you that extra boost, and it also means a lot in general because of the tournaments you get to play with the national team.

“Being here is a huge thing for me because I am a patriotic fan, and I have been following the team for a long time.”

Phillip Otele had previously been named in Nigeria’s provisional squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations but did not make the final cut, with head coach Éric Chelle choosing to assess him during the friendly window instead.

The winger expressed gratitude for the opportunity and the confidence shown in him by the coaching crew.

“I am very happy to be here; it’s a pleasure for me and my family, and I want to say a huge thank you to God first. I also want to thank the Super Eagles for trusting me with this call-up,” he added.

His debut sees him join fellow newcomers Emmanuel Fernandez and Yira Sor, as Nigeria continues to refresh the squad and build depth following their recent international outings.
