Edidiong Okon Udo boosted Nigeria’s medal hopes at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games after producing an assured display to secure a place in the men’s 400 metres semi-finals, Trybal News reports.
The Nigerian quarter-miler controlled his opening-round race from start to finish, crossing the line in 45.73 seconds to comfortably claim victory ahead of Barbados’ Desean Boyce and Grenada’s Michael Francois.
Udo’s composed performance further highlighted the form that has made him one of Nigeria’s standout one-lap runners this season. Having dipped below the 45-second mark earlier in the year with a personal best of 44.91 seconds, the 27-year-old arrived in Glasgow with growing expectations and lived up to them in his first outing.
His progression continues an encouraging campaign for Nigeria on the track, with several athletes already advancing in sprint and 400m events. Patience Okon-George and Esther Elo Joseph also booked places in the women’s 400m semi-finals, while Favour Ashe, Nicholas Fakorede, Kayinsola Ajayi, Miracle Ezechukwu, Blessing Ogundiran and Rosemary Chukwuma remain in contention after progressing from their respective heats.
With Team Nigeria already enjoying success across multiple sports, Udo’s convincing start adds another reason for optimism as the race for Commonwealth medals gathers pace. The focus now shifts to the semi-finals, where the Nigerian will be aiming to move within one race of the podium.
