Abia Warriors head coach Imama Amapakabo and his assistant, Bethel Orji, have been suspended by the club following the team’s disappointing 2-0 home defeat to Kun Khalifat FC in a crucial Nigeria Premier Football League Matchday 37 encounter.

The suspension was announced with immediate effect, while both officials were instructed to stay away from all club related activities pending the outcome of further investigations.

The decision was confirmed in an official letter dated May 11, 2026, and signed by club chairman John Obuh. According to the club, the action was taken over issues relating to “insubordination” by the coaching crew.

It was further revealed that the suspension was linked to incidents surrounding Abia Warriors’ recent FA Cup semi final clash against Ahudiyannem FC as well as the league defeat to Kun Khalifat FC, results that reportedly caused serious concern within the club’s management.

“Despite several directives and advice concerning adjustments to the team’s line-up in both matches, the coaching crew failed to comply with the instructions, resulting in defeats that brought embarrassment to the club and Abia State,” the club’s management explained.

The statement also confirmed that investigations into the matter have already begun and that both Amapakabo and Orji are expected to cooperate fully with the investigation panel whenever required.

In the meantime, former Super Eagles goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu and his assistants have been directed to immediately take over the management and operations of the team until further notice.

Club chairman John Obuh also expressed disappointment over the situation during an interview with Completesports.com on Monday evening. He admitted it was unfortunate for the club to find itself in such an embarrassing position despite previous assurances and expectations surrounding the team.

The development comes at a difficult moment for Abia Warriors, whose hopes of finishing strongly this season have suffered a major setback. With only one NPFL match remaining, the club currently sit seventh on the table with 55 points after scoring 30 goals and conceding 32 this campaign.
