Team Nigeria was unable to add to its medal tally on Day 2 of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, although its athletes delivered several encouraging performances across swimming, boxing and wheelchair basketball, Trybal News reports.

After a record-breaking opening day that produced three gold and three silver medals, Nigeria ended Saturday without a podium finish, dropping one place to third in the overall medal standings behind Australia and England.

The country’s standout performance came in the swimming pool, where national record holder Abduljabar Adama continued to impress. Competing in the men’s 50m freestyle, Adama clocked 22.67 seconds to finish third in his heat and qualify for the semifinals behind Australia’s Flynn Southam (22.03s) and England’s Jacob Mills (22.40s).
Adama returned later in the day for the semifinals and improved his time to 22.44s, but his effort was only enough for sixth place, leaving him just short of a place in the final.
Fellow Nigerian Clinton Opute also featured in the men’s 50m freestyle, posting a time of 23.15s to finish sixth in his heat. His performance left him as the second reserve for the semifinals.
The pair were back in action in the men’s 100m butterfly, alongside Collin Ebingha. Ebingha finished sixth in his heat with a time of 55.45s, narrowly missing out on a semifinal berth, while Adama placed seventh in 55.81s as both swimmers saw their campaigns in the event come to an end.

Nigeria’s boxing campaign also suffered a setback as David Akintola bowed out in the men’s round of 32 following a closely contested bout against Tanzania’s Yusuf Lucasi Changalawe. Akintola lost by a 4-1 split decision on points, with the Tanzanian advancing to the round of 16.
In the women’s wheelchair 3×3 basketball competition, Nigeria fell to a 16-1 defeat against hosts Scotland.
Despite the medal drought on Day 2, Team Nigeria remains among the leading nations at the Games and will look to return to the podium as competition continues in Glasgow.
