Nigeria on Monday received the African Games Bid Evaluation Committee, marking a key milestone in its pursuit of the hosting rights for the 2031 African Games.

The delegation, headed by Dr. Decius Chipande, was welcomed by officials of the National Sports Commission (NSC), where they were taken through a detailed presentation highlighting the country’s preparedness, capacity, and long-term vision for staging a successful tournament.

Speaking during the session, NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, reiterated the Federal Government’s firm backing of the bid. He stressed that hosting the Games is a national priority, underpinned by strong political will and a clear commitment to delivering world-class infrastructure, efficient organisation, and a lasting sporting legacy.

Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, outlined Nigeria’s sponsorship and marketing strategy, pointing to innovative funding models and commercial partnerships. He noted that the nation’s large market, rich sporting culture, and increasing private sector involvement position it well for a financially viable Games.

Adding further insight, bid coordinator Mainasara Ilo presented the legacy framework, explaining how hosting the Games would drive youth development, boost infrastructure, and create widespread community impact.

On the medical side, Dr. Paul Onyedo detailed Nigeria’s readiness in sports medicine, including its approach to anti-doping, testing, and athlete health management in line with global standards. Meanwhile, Dr. Emmanuel Igbinosa highlighted plans for athlete welfare, assuring the committee of a safe, secure, and athlete-focused environment throughout the competition.

The Evaluation Committee praised the presentation, commending its clear vision, thorough planning, and the strong collaboration between government and private sector stakeholders.

Facility inspections began on Monday and are expected to continue on Tuesday as part of the assessment process.

With a comprehensive bid anchored on experience, infrastructure, and national support, Nigeria remains optimistic about securing the right to host the 2031 African Games.
