Ethiopian long-distance runner Habtamu Birhane etched his name in history by winning the maiden edition of the Yenagoa City International 10KM Race in Bayelsa State, Nigeria. He delivered a standout performance, crossing the finish line in 29:23 to claim the $5,000 top prize.


Nigeria’s Gang James finished second in 29:59, while Francis James secured third place with a time of 30:16. The duo earned $3,000 and $2,000 respectively for their podium finishes.

In the women’s race, Ethiopian athletes dominated the field, sweeping all top three positions. Shewaye Dugo Tolosa led the pack with a winning time of 33:50, followed by Tigist Girma (34:07) and Gacasho Jilo (34:57).
Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, commended the organizers Nilayo Sports Management in collaboration with the State Ministry of Sports for delivering a successful debut event. He emphasized the race’s long-term vision, stating that it is poised to become a major fixture on the sporting calendar and a platform to elevate Bayelsa’s global sporting profile.
