Brazil’s 2026 FIFA World Cup journey ended in heartbreaking fashion as Erling Haaland scored twice to inspire Norway to a famous 2-1 victory in the round of 16. The historic win sends Norway into the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time, where they will face either England or Mexico.

Brazil arrived in the knockout stage after topping Group C with seven points before edging Japan thanks to Gabriel Martinelli’s dramatic 95th minute winner.

The five time world champions had progressed from nine of their previous 10 World Cup round of 16 matches. However, they also carried an unwanted record into the contest, having lost each of their last six World Cup knockout games against European opponents since defeating Germany in the 2002 final.

Norway almost made the perfect start inside three minutes when Sander Berge fired into the top corner, but the celebrations were cut short after Alexander Sorloth was ruled offside in the build up.

Brazil thought they had earned a penalty in the 10th minute after Kristoffer Ajer brought down Matheus Cunha inside the area. The referee initially waved play on, but VAR advised a review. After watching the replay on the pitchside monitor, the official pointed to the penalty spot.

Bruno Guimaraes stepped up two minutes later, but Ørjan Nyland guessed correctly and produced an excellent save to deny Brazil the opening goal. The missed opportunity proved costly as Norway continued to grow into the match.

Although Brazil gradually improved, Norway remained dangerous on the counterattack. Gabriel Martinelli forced Nyland into another smart save after a brilliant run down the left, while Erling Haaland tested Alisson with a glancing header before Martin Ødegaard’s close range effort was comfortably gathered by the Brazilian goalkeeper.

Vinicius Junior almost broke the deadlock before halftime after winning possession high up the pitch, but Nyland once again came to Norway’s rescue with an excellent save to keep the scores level.

The teams went into the break locked at 0-0 after an entertaining first half. Norway had an early goal ruled out and denied Brazil from the penalty spot, while both goalkeepers produced several important saves to keep the contest finely balanced.

Brazil created another golden opportunity in the 59th minute when Vinicius Junior released substitute Endrick with a perfectly weighted through ball. However, the young striker took a heavy touch, allowing Nyland to close the angle before Endrick dragged his finish wide.

Nyland continued his outstanding display three minutes later by getting down quickly to stop a powerful strike from Rayan as Brazil increased the pressure.

Carlo Ancelotti then made an emotional substitution just before the hydration break. Gabriel Martinelli made way for Neymar, with the Brazil supporters giving their returning star a huge ovation. Neymar was making his seventh World Cup knockout appearance after contributing five goals across his previous six matches at this stage.

Norway finally found the breakthrough in the 79th minute through the inevitable Haaland. Andreas Schjelderup delivered a superb cross from the left and the Manchester City striker rose above Gabriel to power an unstoppable header beyond Alisson. It was Haaland’s sixth goal of the tournament and his 14th consecutive goal in a competitive international match.

Brazil pushed desperately for an equaliser, but Nyland continued to frustrate them. In the 86th minute, the goalkeeper produced another remarkable save after Endrick’s effort looped towards the top corner following a defensive block.

Norway sealed their famous victory in the 90th minute with another devastating attack. Schjelderup once again turned provider as he found Haaland inside the box. The striker took one touch before drilling a low finish into the bottom right corner to make it 2-0 and send the Norwegian fans into celebration.

Haaland’s seventh goal of the tournament also moved him level with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe in the race for the Golden Boot.

Brazil earned a late consolation deep into stoppage time when Leo Østigård caught Casemiro with an elbow inside the penalty area. The referee immediately awarded another penalty, and Neymar calmly sent Nyland the wrong way to reduce the deficit to 2-1. However, there was no time left for a comeback.

At the final whistle, Norway celebrated one of the greatest victories in their football history. Inspired by Haaland’s brilliant brace and Nyland’s outstanding goalkeeping display, they knocked out five time world champions Brazil to reach the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals for the first time.

They will now face either England or Mexico for a place in the last four, while Brazil’s hopes of winning a sixth World Cup title came to another painful end against European opposition.
