Nigeria international goalkeeper Francis Uzoho has ended his five-year association with Omonia Nicosia, joining Cypriot First Division rivals Omonia 29is Maiou in a move that could give the Super Eagles goalkeeper a fresh start and regular first-team football, Trybal News reports.
Uzoho’s departure comes after he was informed by Omonia that he was free to find a new club before the close of the summer transfer window.
The 27-year-old had largely operated as back-up to experienced goalkeeper Fabiano in recent seasons, despite remaining an important member of the squad. His situation became even clearer at the beginning of the new campaign, when he was left on the bench for Omonia’s first six competitive matches.
The decision came shortly after Omonia secured their progression to the Europa League group stage, with Uzoho subsequently given permission to seek a new challenge.
The Nigeria international attracted interest from three clubs in Cyprus before deciding to remain in the country and make the switch to Omonia 29is Maiou, who have emerged as early-season leaders in the Cypriot top flight.
The move also brings an end to Uzoho’s long-standing association with Omonia and sees him join one of their domestic rivals.
Uzoho is expected to take up the number-one position at his new club, with his extensive experience of Cypriot football giving him an advantage as he looks to establish himself as the team’s first-choice goalkeeper.
The transfer has been officially announced by both clubs.
Although the exact duration of the contract has not been disclosed, sources indicate that Uzoho has agreed a three-year deal with an option for an additional season, with the extension understood to be linked to his performances and the success of his initial years at the club.
Uzoho leaves Omonia having made 77 appearances across all competitions, keeping 29 clean sheets. Among the highlights of his time in Nicosia was his memorable performance against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Europa League in October 2022.
Uzoho produced a series of impressive saves to keep Omonia in the contest and appeared set to secure a remarkable clean sheet against the Premier League giants before Scott McTominay scored in the third minute of stoppage time.
After confirming his departure, Uzoho paid tribute to Omonia’s supporters, describing his time at the club as a memorable journey.
What a journey it’s been for me with this badge on my chest, so much memories. It was an honor to represent this massive club,” Uzoho wrote.
A very big thank you to the fans, the love you guys showed towards me from day one till the last day will never be forgotten.
I’d hate to say goodbye but it’s not in my hands. I will always love this club. Good bye.”
For Uzoho, the move represents more than a change of club. After spending much of his recent Omonia career behind Fabiano, he now has the opportunity to reclaim a starting role, remain in a league he knows well and rebuild momentum ahead of the next phase of his international career.
