Getafe have suffered a major setback ahead of the 2026/27 La Liga season after Super Eagles midfielder Christantus Uche suffered a serious knee injury.
The 23 year old will miss the entire campaign after medical tests confirmed significant damage to his right knee, Trybal News reports.
According to Diario AS, Uche picked up the injury during Getafe’s pre season friendly against AS Monaco on Thursday.
The midfielder left the pitch on a stretcher after a reckless challenge from Monaco defender Christian Mawissa.
The referee immediately showed Mawissa a straight red card for the tackle, while initial tests suggested that Uche had suffered a severe contusion.
However, further examinations revealed a much more serious problem.
An MRI scan confirmed multiple tears to the ligaments and meniscus in Uche’s right knee. As a result, the Nigeria international will undergo surgery in the coming days.
He will then begin a lengthy rehabilitation programme, effectively ending his season before Getafe’s competitive campaign has even started.
The injury represents a major blow for Christantus Uche, who had hoped to play an important role for Getafe this season.
He returned to the Spanish club this summer after completing a loan spell with Crystal Palace. The midfielder was expected to challenge for a regular place in Jose Bordalas’ squad.
Instead, the injury has forced him to begin another difficult recovery process at a crucial stage of his career.
Getafe will also feel Uche’s absence as they prepare for another demanding La Liga campaign. His versatility and midfield presence had made him a useful option for Bordalas.
The setback also affects the Super Eagles.
Uche is now set to miss Nigeria’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches, leaving the national team without an important midfield option.
For Uche, the immediate focus will now shift from the new season to surgery and rehabilitation. For Getafe and Nigeria, meanwhile, they must find ways to cope without the young midfielder for the campaign ahead.
