Cabo Verde created one of the biggest stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after securing a historic place in the knockout stage with a hard fought 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia at Houston Stadium.

The result, combined with Uruguay’s defeat to Spain, sealed a second place finish in Group H and sent the Blue Sharks into the Round of 32 in their first ever World Cup appearance.

Head coach Bubista made five changes to the side that drew with Uruguay. Pina and Paulo came into the full back positions, with Paulo replacing the suspended Sidny Cabral after the defender collected yellow cards in both previous matches. Telmo Arcanjo also missed out with a hamstring injury after leaving the Uruguay game at half time, while Laros Duarte earned a starting role. Despite scoring the equaliser in the previous match, Varela began on the bench once again.

Cabo Verde controlled possession during the opening stages but struggled to create clear openings. In the seventh minute, they attempted to play a direct ball over the top for Mendes, but Al-Boushail read the danger well and cleared comfortably before the forward could threaten.

The match remained tight throughout the first half, with both teams cancelling each other out in midfield. Saudi Arabia produced the best opportunity deep into first half stoppage time when Mandash floated a dangerous cross into the six yard box for Kanno. The midfielder met the delivery with a header, but his effort lacked power and Vozinha gathered comfortably.

The teams went into the break with the score still goalless after a cagey opening 45 minutes. Cabo Verde’s best chance came through Semedo, whose low effort forced Mohammed Al Owais into a save at his near post. Saudi Arabia edged the expected goals with 0.19 compared to Cabo Verde’s 0.13, although neither side showed enough attacking quality before half time. Saudi Arabia also suffered an early setback after Al Tambakti was stretchered off through injury.

Cabo Verde started the second half with greater purpose and almost broke the deadlock three minutes after the restart. Mendes surged down the left before finding Monteiro in space, but his effort failed to trouble Al Owais.

The Blue Sharks continued to push forward and came close again in the 75th minute. Substitute Laros Duarte made an immediate impact after coming on, receiving the ball inside the penalty area before firing towards goal. However, Al Owais reacted quickly to make a vital save and keep Saudi Arabia level.

Cabo Verde nearly found the breakthrough again in the 86th minute. Rodrigues cut the ball back perfectly for Wagner Pina, who found himself completely unmarked inside the box. Just as Pina prepared to shoot, Al Amri produced a superb block to deny what looked like a certain goal.

The biggest chance of the match arrived deep into stoppage time. With Saudi Arabia committing bodies forward, Cabo Verde broke quickly on the counter. Rodrigues squared the ball for Da Costa, who had an open goal in front of him, but the forward dragged his effort wide to the disbelief of his teammates.

Despite failing to score, Cabo Verde finished as the more dangerous side. They ended the match with an expected goals tally of 1.52 compared to Saudi Arabia’s 0.40 and fully deserved their place in the knockout rounds.

The final whistle sparked emotional celebrations as Cabo Verde completed one of the greatest achievements in their football history. Several players struggled to hold back tears as they celebrated reaching the World Cup knockout stage on their tournament debut.

The Blue Sharks finished second in Group H after drawing all three group matches and will now face defending champions Argentina in Miami in the Round of 32. Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, finished bottom of the group with two points and exited the tournament.

Cabo Verde’s remarkable journey continues after an unforgettable year. The African nation qualified for its first ever World Cup by topping a qualifying group that included Cameroon. They have now lost just once in their last 18 matches, winning eight and drawing nine. Their incredible rise has made the Blue Sharks one of the tournament’s most inspiring stories and a team many neutrals will continue to support.
