Aliou Cissé has brought his time with the Libyan national team to an unexpected end, stepping down despite having a contract that was meant to run until 2027, Trybal News reports.

The former Senegal coach confirmed his departure with an emotional message shared on his official Instagram page, closing the chapter on a stint that lasted just over a year with the team known as the Knights of the Mediterranean.

Cissé, who took charge in March 2025, managed eight competitive matches during his time in charge. He recorded three wins, four draws and just one defeat, starting strongly with a notable 1-0 victory over Angola in September 2025. While the results on the pitch were largely encouraging, his tenure was overshadowed by ongoing issues off it, particularly unpaid salaries that dragged on for months and were only partially settled by the Libyan Football Federation.

Shortly after his exit, a new opportunity quickly emerged. The Angolan Football Federation officially confirmed Cissé as their new head coach, moving swiftly to secure his services.

In their announcement, the federation made it clear that his main objective will be to lead Angola to qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be co-hosted by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. The task is a significant one, especially after Angola’s disappointing outing at the last tournament, where they managed only two draws and one defeat before exiting early.

With the deal concluded in quick fashion, Cissé is set to begin work immediately, turning his attention to preparing the Palancas Negras for upcoming international friendlies scheduled for the June window.
