Ruth Asuquo Nyong produced a determined performance to win silver in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event, extending Team Nigeria’s impressive medal haul at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, Trybal News reports.

Competing at the SEC Armadillo on Sunday, Nyong registered a combined lift of 168kg to finish second, edging Malaysia’s Irene Jane Henry by a single kilogram in one of the competition’s closest contests.
The Nigerian opened strongly with a best snatch of 75kg, placing third behind India’s Mirabai Chanu Saikhom (85kg) and Henry (77kg). She then delivered under pressure in the clean and jerk, successfully lifting 93kg to move into silver medal position with a total of 168kg.
Olympic champion Mirabai Chanu Saikhom successfully defended her Commonwealth Games title in dominant fashion, setting a new Games record with a total lift of 190kg to claim gold, while Henry settled for bronze on 167kg.
Nyong’s podium finish increases Team Nigeria’s medal tally to seven medals, three gold and four silver maintaining the country’s strong start to the Games. Nigeria’s campaign has been spearheaded by its para powerlifting team, whose record-breaking performances on the opening day established the early momentum for the delegation.
With the athletics programme now underway and several Nigerian medal contenders set to begin their events, Team Nigeria will be aiming to build on its encouraging start as it pursues the National Sports Commission’s medal target in Glasgow.
Nyong’s latest success further underlines Nigeria’s enduring strength in weightlifting and provides another timely boost to the country’s ambitions as competition intensifies across the Commonwealth Games.
