The French Football Federation (FFF) has officially appealed to FIFA in a bid to overturn the yellow card shown to Michael Olise during France’s 1-0 FIFA World Cup round of 16 victory over Paraguay. The booking has left the Bayern Munich playmaker walking a disciplinary tightrope ahead of Les Bleus’ quarter-final clash with Morocco.

Olise has been one of the standout performers of the 2026 World Cup, but another yellow card against Morocco in Foxborough would trigger an automatic one-match suspension. That would rule him out of a potential semi-final against either Spain or Portugal if France progress.

The caution came after a heated confrontation with Paraguay midfielder Matias Galarza during Saturday’s knockout encounter. Galarza went to ground claiming contact to the face, but television replays appeared to show that Olise’s initial contact was only a tug on the midfielder’s shirt.

According to The Athletic, the FFF has now asked FIFA to review the incident and cancel the booking. French officials believe the yellow card resulted from an officiating error and should not stand.

The appeal arrives during one of the most controversial disciplinary debates of the tournament. FIFA recently stunned the football world by suspending the automatic one-match ban handed to United States striker Folarin Balogun. The decision followed high-level discussions involving United States President Donald Trump and an extensive legal effort from U.S. Soccer. Although Balogun received a straight red card against Bosnia-Herzegovina, FIFA invoked Article 27 of its disciplinary code to suspend the ban, allowing him to feature against Belgium in the round of 16.

The FFF has stressed that its appeal is completely separate from the Balogun case. French officials insist their request rests solely on the facts surrounding Olise’s booking and argue that the caution should be removed because it was incorrect. Even so, the timing highlights how national associations have become more willing to challenge disciplinary decisions after FIFA’s handling of the Balogun suspension.

France also knows how important Olise has become during this World Cup. The Bayern Munich winger leads the tournament assist chart with five, the highest total by any player at a single World Cup since 1994. He also sits just one assist behind Pele’s all-time World Cup record of six, set in 1970.

Olise has already collected two Man of the Match awards during the tournament. He starred in France’s opening 3-1 victory over Senegal by setting up Kylian Mbappe’s goal before producing two assists in the 3-0 round of 32 win against Sweden.

His outstanding form has placed him among the leading contenders for the Golden Ball award. Former France striker Thierry Henry even described his performances as being on “another planet.”

France will hope FIFA rules in their favour before Thursday’s quarter-final against Morocco. Losing one of their most influential creative players for a possible semi-final would be a major setback, especially with Didier Deschamps’ attacking system built around Olise’s partnership with Kylian Mbappe.
