Colombia secured first place in Group K after playing out a thrilling 0-0 draw with Portugal in their final 2026 World Cup group stage match at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Although neither side found the net, the contest delivered plenty of excitement, outstanding goalkeeping and several missed chances as both teams booked their places in the Round of 32.

The match brought together the top two teams in the group. Colombia arrived with six points from victories over Uzbekistan and DR Congo, knowing a draw would be enough to finish first. Portugal, who had bounced back from a draw against DR Congo with a commanding 5-0 win over Uzbekistan, needed a victory to overtake Colombia and claim top spot. Cristiano Ronaldo came into the game full of confidence after scoring twice in Portugal’s previous outing.

Colombia nearly made the perfect start in the second minute. Luis Diaz burst beyond Joao Cancelo and fired a low effort into the box. The shot took a deflection and fell kindly for Jhon Cordoba, whose header drifted just over the crossbar.

The South Americans continued to threaten six minutes later. Camilo Vargas launched a long goal kick, Cordoba outmuscled Renato Veiga and laid the ball into the path of James Rodriguez, but the experienced playmaker dragged his effort wide of the right post.

Portugal responded in the 17th minute after Cristiano Ronaldo’s clever flick was intercepted by Jhon Lucumi. Colombia quickly launched a counterattack, with Cordoba brushing aside Bruno Fernandes before unleashing a powerful shot that forced Diogo Costa into an excellent save. Costa then reacted again to punch clear from the resulting corner.

Colombia’s high intensity caused Portugal constant problems throughout the opening half, with Cordoba providing a strong physical presence in attack.

Another outstanding move almost gave Colombia the lead in the 22nd minute. James Rodriguez threaded a superb pass into Jhon Arias, whose low strike beat Costa but was brilliantly cleared off the goal line by Ruben Neves.

Portugal finally created a clear opening in the 40th minute. Bruno Fernandes spun inside the penalty area and drilled a powerful effort toward goal, but veteran goalkeeper Camilo Vargas produced a superb save. Ronaldo attempted an acrobatic bicycle kick from the rebound before Ruben Neves fired narrowly wide from distance.

Two minutes later, Joao Felix nearly broke the deadlock. The forward controlled a throw in brilliantly with his chest before sending a volley inches over Vargas’ crossbar.

The teams went into halftime level after an entertaining first half packed with chances. Colombia looked the more dangerous side for long periods, while both goalkeepers delivered impressive performances to keep the score goalless.

Colombia resumed their attacking approach after the break. In the 55th minute, Johan Mojica kept possession alive before finding Jefferson Lerma, whose fierce drive forced another outstanding save from Costa. Moments later, Arias tried his luck from distance, but Costa gathered comfortably.

Costa’s outstanding display continued as he recorded his fifth save of the match, the most he has made in a single FIFA World Cup game.

Colombia came agonisingly close again in the 62nd minute. Rodriguez unlocked the Portuguese defence with another superb pass before Richard Rios met the pullback first time, only to guide his effort narrowly wide of the right post.

The pressure continued four minutes later when Arias curled a powerful effort toward goal, but Costa produced another excellent save to push the ball behind. From the resulting corner, Puertas fired just wide of the left post as Colombia intensified their search for the winner.

Portugal threatened late in the match through Diogo Dalot, whose long range effort from the edge of the area drifted safely wide with Vargas watching comfortably.

The biggest moment arrived deep into stoppage time. Davinson Sanchez thought he had headed Colombia into the lead after converting at the back post. However, the assistant referee immediately raised the flag, and after a lengthy VAR review, the goal was ruled out for offside despite initial replays suggesting otherwise.

Colombia finished the match with 24 attempts on goal, their highest total in a World Cup game since records began in 1966. Despite their dominance, they could not find a breakthrough against an inspired Costa.

The goalless draw proved enough for Colombia to finish top of Group K with seven points, while Portugal advanced to the knockout stage as runners up. Both sides now turn their attention to the Round of 32 after serving up one of the most entertaining scoreless matches of the tournament.
