Nicolas Pepe scored twice as Côte d’Ivoire secured a 2-0 victory over Curacao at Philadelphia Stadium to qualify for the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time in the nation’s history.

Côte d’Ivoire made the perfect start in the seventh minute. Curacao failed to clear their lines, allowing Yan Diomande to win possession before cutting the ball back for Pepe, who calmly tapped home to give the Ivorians an early 1-0 lead.

Diomande continued to trouble the Curacao defence throughout the first half. In the 18th minute, the winger burst into the penalty area and drilled a dangerous cross towards the far post. However, Franck Kessie and Diallo got in each other’s way, and the chance ended with Diallo sending his effort wide.

Curacao nearly found an equaliser just before the break. In the 44th minute, captain Leandro Bacuna skipped past Doue and Diallo before driving a low effort towards the near post. His shot struck the side netting, giving goalkeeper Yahia Fofana a brief scare.

At half-time, Côte d’Ivoire held a deserved 1-0 advantage after dominating much of the opening period. Pepe’s early goal settled the nerves, while Diomande remained a constant threat down the left flank with several dangerous deliveries into the box. Curacao created very little despite efforts from Chong and Bacuna. Côte d’Ivoire also finished the first half with a superior expected goals (xG) of 0.8 compared to Curacao’s 0.08.

Pepe wrapped up the victory in the 64th minute with his second goal of the evening. Ibrahim Sangare spotted the Villarreal winger’s run and produced a perfectly weighted through ball. Pepe raced clear before confidently beating Eloy Room with a composed finish into the top-left corner to make it 2-0.

Curacao searched for a late consolation goal, but their efforts came to nothing. Antonisse’s attempt inside the box deflected into the path of Juninho Bacuna, although the assistant referee quickly raised the flag for offside.

The victory confirmed Côte d’Ivoire’s place in the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time after failing to progress beyond the group stage in each of their previous three appearances. The Ivorians needed only a draw to advance but removed any doubt with a professional display led by Pepe’s clinical brace.

Diomande played a key role throughout the contest, constantly unsettling the Curacao defence. His early pressing created the opening goal, while his pace and movement down the left wing kept the Blue Wave under pressure for most of the match.

Curacao exit the tournament after a spirited debut World Cup campaign. They made history in their opening match when Livano Comenencia scored the nation’s first-ever World Cup goal against Germany, although they eventually suffered a 7-1 defeat. They then earned their first World Cup point with an impressive goalless draw against Ecuador, inspired by goalkeeper Eloy Room. However, needing a victory to reach the knockout stage, they could not overcome a disciplined Côte d’Ivoire side.

Côte d’Ivoire entered the tournament in impressive form. They opened their campaign with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Ecuador, as Amad Diallo came off the bench to score a 90th-minute winner. They then pushed Germany all the way after Franck Kessie gave them the lead before two second-half goals from Deniz Undav handed the Europeans a 2-1 comeback victory.

That setback did not derail their campaign. Instead, the Ivorians responded with a composed performance against Curacao as Pepe’s double secured a landmark victory and booked their place in the round of 32 for the first time in World Cup history.
