Türkiye’s 2026 FIFA World Cup dream came to a heartbreaking end after a 1-0 defeat to Paraguay at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium on Friday. Despite dominating possession, creating numerous chances and playing against 10 men for the entire second half, Vincenzo Montella’s side failed to find the breakthrough they desperately needed.

The match marked the first World Cup meeting between the two nations. Their only previous encounter came in a friendly in Chile back in June 1995, which ended in a goalless draw. This time, however, Paraguay found the decisive moment almost immediately.

Paraguay stunned Türkiye after just 65 seconds. Matías Galarza won possession high up the pitch before receiving a threaded pass around 25 yards from goal. The midfielder wasted no time, drilling a superb low effort into the bottom corner to give Paraguay an early 1-0 lead. The strike became the fastest goal of the tournament so far.

Türkiye responded positively and gradually took control of the contest. Ferdi Kadioglu caused constant problems down the left flank with a series of dangerous overlapping runs, while Paraguay increasingly found themselves pinned inside their own half.

The closest Türkiye came to an equaliser in the first half arrived in the 35th minute. Hakan Calhanoglu delivered a dangerous free kick into the penalty area and Mert Müldür rose highest to meet it. His header beat the goalkeeper but crashed off the crossbar, struck the post and somehow bounced away to safety.

The drama intensified deep into first-half stoppage time. Following a lengthy VAR review, referee officials examined an incident involving Miguel Almiron and Mert Müldür. After checking the pitchside monitor, the referee showed Almiron a red card for covering his mouth while speaking to his opponent. It marked the first use of the tournament’s new disciplinary rule and left Paraguay with 10 men for the entire second half.

Türkiye piled forward after the restart but struggled to turn possession into clear-cut chances. Early in the second half, Ismail Yüksek tried his luck from distance, but his effort flew comfortably over the crossbar.

The best opportunity arrived in the 62nd minute when substitute Deniz Gül met a floated delivery inside the box. However, he failed to generate enough power on his header and Orlando Gill gathered comfortably.

By the 63rd minute, Türkiye had already registered 19 attempts on goal without scoring. Frustration continued to grow on the touchline, with head coach Montella receiving a booking as his side searched desperately for an equaliser.

Paraguay defended resolutely and continued to frustrate their opponents. Even with a numerical disadvantage, they limited Türkiye to half chances and remained disciplined throughout.

The missed opportunities became even more painful in the closing stages. In the 85th minute, Arda Güler came agonisingly close when a dangerous ball flashed across the six-yard box, but the Real Madrid playmaker could not make contact.

Then, in the 90th minute, Denis Yılmaz squared the ball to Can Uzun inside the area. Uzun’s effort was parried away and the rebound was sent wide. Although the follow-up would have been ruled out for offside, Uzun still should have done better with the initial chance.

The final whistle confirmed a frustrating evening for Türkiye. They finished with 30 shots against Australia in their opening match and failed to score. Against Paraguay, they managed another 32 attempts but once again came away empty-handed.

Paraguay, meanwhile, celebrated a vital victory built on resilience, discipline and an early moment of quality from Galarza. The South Americans survived relentless pressure and an entire half with 10 men to secure all three points and keep their World Cup hopes alive.

For Türkiye, the defeat officially ends their hopes of reaching the knockout stage. Despite controlling long periods of both group matches, their inability to convert chances ultimately proved costly.

The result also continued Paraguay’s respectable record against European opposition at the World Cup. Before this match, they had won only two of their previous 14 World Cup games against UEFA nations, defeating Slovenia in 2002 and Slovakia in 2010. On Friday, they added Türkiye to that list with a hard-fought victory that could prove crucial in Group D.
