Ecuador head coach Sebastian Beccacece expressed his frustration after his side’s 19-match unbeaten run came to an end with a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in their opening Group E match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Amad Diallo struck in the 90th minute to hand the Ivorians all three points, despite Ecuador controlling large periods of the contest and creating the better chances throughout the game.

The South Americans hit the woodwork three times and missed several opportunities, only to suffer a crushing setback when Diallo’s late strike decided the match in Philadelphia.

“It hurts because it was an unfair defeat,” Beccacece told reporters after the game.

“I think there are very strong arguments to clearly show that the team competed very well, had the clearest chances and could have won the match, but because of one detail at the end, we leave with nothing.”

Ecuador arrived at the tournament in outstanding form. They had not lost a match since September 2024 and possessed one of the strongest defensive records in international football. However, their inability to convert chances proved costly against a determined Côte d’Ivoire side.

John Yeboah and Alan Minda both struck the crossbar during a dominant first-half display, while Enner Valencia also wasted a clear opportunity as Ecuador repeatedly threatened without finding the breakthrough.

Beccacece admitted his side paid the price for failing to capitalise on their superiority.

“When a team is clearly superior and doesn’t take its chances, it gives the opponent the feeling that it is still alive,” Beccacece said.

“I never felt they deserved to win the match, but football is not about what you deserve. It’s about taking your chances.”

The Argentine manager also voiced his frustration over a second-half challenge involving Ivory Coast defender Guela Doue, believing the defender should have received a second yellow card and been sent off.

“We all saw what was clearly a second yellow card and a sending-off,” Beccacece said. “Those are things we cannot control. They hurt, but we have to accept them.”

Despite the disappointing result, Beccacece remains confident Ecuador can still qualify for the knockout rounds. The defeat leaves them under pressure ahead of upcoming group matches against Curaçao and Germany, but the coach insists qualification remains firmly within reach.

“When you don’t start the way you wanted, the anxiety appears,” he said.

“But now we need more conviction than ever, more belief than ever, more confidence than ever.”

Beccacece also reserved special praise for Ecuador’s supporters, who created a vibrant atmosphere throughout the match and turned large sections of Philadelphia Stadium into a sea of yellow.

The coach admitted the biggest disappointment was not being able to reward the travelling fans with a positive result after a performance he felt deserved victory.

“What hurts me the most and makes me the saddest is not being able to give something back to the people,” he said.

“When you do enough to win, with the atmosphere that was created here, and you don’t achieve it, it hurts.”

Ecuador must now quickly recover from the setback as they prepare for two crucial Group E fixtures. While the defeat ended their impressive unbeaten streak, Beccacece believes the quality shown against Côte d’Ivoire provides enough evidence that his team can still reach the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
