Germany launched their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in devastating fashion with a commanding 7-1 victory over tournament debutants Curaçao in their Group E opener at Houston Stadium in Texas. Kai Havertz scored twice as the four time world champions produced a ruthless attacking display to claim all three points and underline their title credentials.
Germany started brightly and threatened as early as the third minute when Nathaniel Brown burst into the penalty area. However, Curaçao managed to clear his dangerous cutback before easing the pressure with a free kick.
The breakthrough arrived in the sixth minute. Jamal Musiala forced a brilliant block from Armando Obispo, but Germany immediately recycled possession. Florian Wirtz then delivered a perfectly weighted pass for Felix Nmecha, who unleashed a superb strike into the top corner to give Germany a deserved lead.
Nmecha almost doubled the advantage three minutes later. The midfielder cut inside and fired another powerful effort, but this time the ball drifted narrowly wide of the post.
Germany continued to dominate possession and chances. In the 15th minute, Wirtz danced inside from the left flank with a series of stepovers before aiming for the far corner, only to see his effort miss the target.
Despite Germany’s control, Curaçao stunned the crowd in the 21st minute. A rare attack caught the German defence off guard, and Livano Comenencia capitalised after a fortunate deflection. The ball fell kindly for him on the edge of the box and he beat Manuel Neuer to score Curaçao’s historic first World Cup goal. The strike sparked wild celebrations among the Caribbean side’s supporters.
Curaçao nearly built on that momentum moments later. Jürgen Locadia surged into the penalty area, performed a clever stepover and went down under pressure from Jonathan Tah. However, the referee waved away appeals as the teams headed into the first hydration break.
Germany responded strongly. In the 28th minute, Joshua Kimmich delivered a dangerous free kick that Nico Schlotterbeck met with a powerful header, only for Eloy Room to produce an excellent save and tip the ball over the bar.
The pressure finally paid off in the 38th minute. Nathaniel Brown swung in a corner and Schlotterbeck escaped his marker before glancing a header into the bottom corner. Curaçao’s zonal marking failed to track the defender’s run, allowing Germany to restore their lead.
Germany then moved firmly into control deep into first half stoppage time. Felix Nmecha drove into the box and was caught on the ankle, leaving the referee with little choice but to award a penalty. Kai Havertz stepped up in the fifth minute of added time and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner despite attempts from the Curaçao fans to distract him.
Germany carried their momentum into the second half and struck again just two minutes after the restart. Kimmich threaded a pass into the path of Musiala, who showed superb composure before guiding a classy finish into the bottom corner for 4-1.
The Germans continued to create chances at will. In the 50th minute, Kimmich quickly took a free kick while Curaçao switched off. Nmecha spun inside the box and fired across goal, but Room reacted sharply to make another save.
Curaçao briefly threatened from a set piece in the 63rd minute when Jeremy Antonisse floated a free kick into the area. Leandro Bacuna rose highest but headed over the crossbar.
Germany remained relentless. Jonathan Tah clipped a superb pass over the defence for Leroy Sané in the 64th minute, but the winger could not keep his finish on target.

The fifth goal arrived four minutes later. Deniz Undav cleverly flicked the ball into Nathaniel Brown’s path, and the left back produced a stunning volley into the far corner. The finish capped an impressive performance and stretched Germany’s lead to 5-1.
That goal also placed Curaçao in unwanted history. They became the first team to concede five goals in their first World Cup match since New Zealand lost 5-2 to Scotland in 1982.
To their credit, Curaçao continued searching for another goal. In the 77th minute, Jearl Margaritha came close with a curling effort that narrowly missed the top corner, leaving Neuer rooted to the spot.
Germany added a sixth goal just one minute later. Havertz squared the ball into the area, Kimmich recovered after a heavy first touch and cut it back for Undav, who squeezed his shot into the bottom corner.
The scoring was completed in the 88th minute. Undav split the Curaçao defence with a precise through ball and Havertz raced clear before delicately lifting his finish over Room to make it 7-1 and complete his brace.
Germany finished with 26 shots and 11 efforts on target in a dominant performance that highlighted the gulf in quality between the two sides. The result puts them in a strong position at the top of Group E after the opening round of matches.
Germany will now turn their attention to a meeting with Ivory Coast, while Curaçao will look to bounce back when they face Ecuador.
The match marked the first ever meeting between Germany and Curaçao. Germany also extended an impressive World Cup record against teams from the Americas, having now won 14 of their last 17 matches against opposition from the region.
For Curaçao, the occasion still represented a historic milestone. The Caribbean nation became the smallest country by both area and population ever to qualify for a FIFA World Cup, and Comenencia’s goal ensured they left Houston with a moment their supporters will never forget.
