An assist was provided by Victor Osimhen, but defeat was ultimately suffered by Galatasaray, who were beaten 4-1 by Samsunspor on Saturday night in the Turkish Super Lig.

A bright start had been made by the league leaders, as the opening goal was created in the ninth minute. Osimhen’s pass was converted by Yunus Akgun to give Galatasaray an early advantage. However, control of the game was gradually lost as Samsunspor responded strongly.

The hosts were inspired by a clinical display in front of goal, with Marius Mouandilmadji and Cherif Ndiaye each scoring twice to turn the game around and secure a dominant victory.

Further difficulties were faced by Galatasaray in the second half when they were reduced to ten men. Goalkeeper Gunay Guvenc was shown a red card in the 63rd minute, making the task even more difficult for the visitors.

As a result of the defeat, an opportunity to secure the Trendyol Super Lig title was missed. A win in this fixture would have confirmed a fourth consecutive league title and a 26th in the club’s history, regardless of other results.

Before the match, Galatasaray had been leading the standings with 74 points from 31 games, having recorded 23 wins, five draws and three defeats. They had held a seven point advantage over Fenerbahce and a nine point lead over Trabzonspor with only three matches remaining.

That gap has now been reduced after Fenerbahce secured a 3-1 victory against Istanbul Basaksehir, cutting the lead at the top to four points and keeping the title race alive heading into the final stretch of the season.

Meanwhile, Samsunspor, who had started the week in seventh place with 45 points, produced one of their standout performances of the campaign to claim a memorable win over the leaders on home soil.
