Nigeria’s U20 women’s national team, the Falconets, have wrapped up a three-week training camp in Abuja as preparations intensify for their decisive FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifying fixture against Malawi.
The team is expected to arrive in Ikenne-Remo, Ogun State, on Sunday ahead of the first leg of the final qualifying round, scheduled for May 2. The Abuja camp focused on improving match fitness, tactical organisation, and overall team cohesion, with players undergoing a demanding training schedule.
Head coach Moses Aduku expressed satisfaction with the team’s progress, noting that the players have responded positively to the technical and physical demands of the programme.
The players have demonstrated strong commitment and discipline throughout the camp. We have made significant improvements in key areas, and the team is in good condition heading into the match,” he said.
Team captain Joy Igbokwe echoed the coach’s sentiments, emphasising the squad’s focus and determination as they approach the crucial encounter.
We understand the importance of this game and we are fully prepared. We are committed to giving our best and making the country proud. We also call on Nigerians to support us,” she said.
The Falconets will be targeting a favourable result in the first leg as they continue their bid to qualify for the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup, which will be hosted by Poland from September 5 to 26.
Nigeria boast a remarkable record in the competition, having featured in every edition since its inception, initially launched as a U19 tournament in Canada. The Falconets will be looking to maintain that tradition as they push for another appearance on the global stage.
