Former Super Eagles midfielder Mutiu Adepoju has praised the Democratic Republic of the Congo for sealing a historic place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while calling on Nigeria to reflect and improve after missing out on qualification.
Congo secured their ticket in dramatic fashion, edging Jamaica 1-0 after extra time in an intercontinental playoff decided at the Estadio Akron. The breakthrough finally arrived 10 minutes into the first half of extra time when Axel Tuanzebe struck the decisive goal to send his side through to the expanded tournament.
The victory confirmed DR Congo’s return to the World Cup stage, marking a significant milestone for the nation as they prepare to compete on football’s biggest platform.
Reacting after the game, Mutiu Adepoju, who represented Nigeria at the 1994, 1998 and 2002 World Cups, congratulated the Congolese team and highlighted the importance of such an achievement for both players and the country.
“I must congratulate DR Congo for defeating Jamaica 1–0 in the intercontinental play-off in Mexico to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals,” Adepoju told Complete Sports.
“It’s good for the country, it’s good for the players, and it’s good for Congolese football.
“World Cup experience is something every player and nation should have, especially when it is a first-time experience.”
While celebrating Congo’s success, the former midfielder did not hide his disappointment at Nigeria’s absence from the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by Mexico, United States and Canada.
He pointed to a lack of urgency and overall approach as key factors behind Nigeria’s failure to qualify, stressing the need for a more serious mindset going forward.
“It’s hard to take that Nigeria isn’t going to be at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but DR Congo instead.
“I just hope lessons have been learnt. We must be more serious next time and more proactive too,” he added.
The result not only sent DR Congo into the global spotlight but also leaves Nigeria with questions to answer as attention shifts to rebuilding and preparing for future international competitions.
