Nigeria’s bid to host the 2031 African Games has entered a decisive phase, with the National Sports Commission (NSC) confirming an upcoming inspection visit by officials of the African Union Sports Council (AUSC).

The delegation is expected in Abuja from March 30 to 31, 2026, for a two-day evaluation tour that will play a key role in determining the country’s chances of securing the hosting rights for Africa’s premier multi-sport event.

Officials say the visit will focus on assessing Nigeria’s sporting infrastructure, logistics, and overall preparedness. Key facilities in the Federal Capital Territory are set to be inspected, alongside support systems considered vital for the successful staging of the Games.

The NSC maintains that Nigeria’s bid is anchored on its experience in hosting major international competitions and its ongoing investment in sports development. Authorities believe these factors strengthen the country’s position among competing nations.

Members of the AUSC delegation, comprising senior officials and technical experts, will evaluate the bid based on established standards, including venue quality, organizational capacity, and technical readiness.

Hosting the 2031 African Games is seen as a major opportunity for Nigeria to accelerate infrastructure development, stimulate economic activity, and expand grassroots participation in sports, while reinforcing its influence within the African sporting community.
