Tension overshadowed football action in Ilorin on Wednesday as Kwara United FC were held to a dramatic 1-1 draw by Rivers United FC in a rescheduled Nigeria Premier Football League clash.

Kwara United seemed on course for victory after Shamshudeen gave the home side the lead in the 30th minute. But in the dying moments of the game, Rivers United struck through Sholumade D. in the 90th minutes to snatch a shocking equalizer.

The late goal, which followed a contentious refereeing decision, sparked outrage among home fans. Some supporters reportedly attacked the referee and Rivers United officials in protest, forcing security personnel to intervene and escort the officials into the stadium dugout. Several sustained injuries in the incident, overshadowing what had been a fiercely contested game.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about fan conduct in the NPFL, with calls for stricter enforcement of stadium safety protocols. Following the incident, the club released an official statement condemning the violence and apologizing to all affected.

“It is with profound regret and deep concern that Kwara United Football Club addresses the unfortunate incidents of violence that occurred following our rescheduled Gameweek 22 match against Rivers United FC, which ended in a 1-1 draw in Ilorin today, February 18, 2026. The club unequivocally condemns the actions of the irrational elements who engaged in such unacceptable behaviour, particularly the attack on Chief Okey Kpalukwu, the respected Chairman of Chairmen in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

Kwara United FC firmly believes that sportsmanship and respect for match officials, opponents, and fellow football administrators must remain paramount at all times. Such regrettable conduct does not in any way represent the core values of the club or the vast majority of our loyal and passionate supporters who continue to stand by the team with dignity and pride. We deeply regret the distress caused to all parties involved and extend our sincere and unreserved apologies to Chief Okey Kpalukwu personally, the Rivers United delegation, match officials, security personnel, and innocent spectators affected by these deplorable events.

To ensure accountability and deter future occurrences, Kwara United FC is fully committed to cooperating with relevant authorities in identifying and prosecuting all individuals found to have perpetrated or incited this violence.

In the meantime, the club appeals to our esteemed fans to remain calm and united as we work diligently to implement enhanced fan sensitization and re-orientation programs.
