Nigeria has secured promotion to the Davis Cup World Group II after a determined victory over Uzbekistan in the World Group II Promotion Playoffs, capping a memorable outing at the historic Lagos Lawn Tennis Club.

Daniel Adeleye proved to be Nigeria’s hero, delivering crucial performances throughout the tie to guide the hosts to a decisive triumph. The Nigerian number one had earlier staged a comeback to defeat Abdulaziz Usmonjonov 4–6, 6–2, 6–4, earning a vital point that kept the country firmly in contention.

The playoff had been finely balanced after the opening singles ended level, but Nigeria shifted momentum in the doubles as the pair of Canice Abua and Michael Emmanuel battled to a 7–6, 6–4 victory over their Uzbek opponents, setting the tone for the final day.

With promotion on the line, Adeleye once again rose to the occasion, sealing the decisive point to hand Nigeria an unassailable lead and confirm their return to a higher tier of international tennis.

Reacting to the achievement, Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, applauded the players and officials for their dedication.

We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of these players and the Nigeria Tennis Federation. We commend everyone who worked tirelessly to organise a fantastic tournament that ultimately ended in success for Nigeria with the promotion we earned,” Olopade said.

He noted that the feat reflects renewed enthusiasm for sports in the country and aligns with ongoing efforts to prepare Nigerian athletes for major global competitions.

Nigeria’s promotion marks a significant milestone for the sport, underlining the team’s steady progress and growing competitiveness on the international stage while giving fans fresh belief in the future of tennis in the country.
