Vincent Kompany has criticised Michael Olise after the winger received a red card during Bayern Munich’s dramatic 3-3 draw with Viking Stavanger in the UEFA Champions League.
The Bayern boss described Olise’s dismissal as “incredibly stupid” after the Frenchman reacted to provocation and left his team with 10 men.
Bayern fought back from a two goal deficit in Norway but conceded a late equalizer. The result left Kompany frustrated, particularly with the mistakes that undermined his side’s performance.
The main incident came in the 74th minute. Olise had already received a yellow card for a tactical foul when Viking captain Zlatko Tripic provoked him.
The 24 year old then threw the ball into Tripic’s face. Referee Georgi Kabakov showed Olise a second yellow card, forcing Bayern to finish the match with 10 players.
Kompany refused to defend the winger’s actions and made his disappointment clear after the game.
“And the red card is incredibly stupid, of course, we have addressed that and we are clear there. It’s also not as if I see too little energy. The team is working, but that must not happen,” the manager stated, as quoted by Bild.

Kompany demands better discipline from Bayern
Despite his anger, Kompany hopes Olise will learn from the incident and make better decisions in future matches. The Bayern manager also revealed that he had spoken directly to the winger about how he allowed Tripic to outsmart him.
With the Champions League set to reach its decisive stages, Kompany knows that such lapses in discipline could prove costly. He wants Olise to take the experience as a lesson rather than allow it to affect his confidence.
“He knows that, we are very clear about such things. I can see in his eyes that he finds it a pity that he did that. Today is not a final or a semi-final, but such moments are decisive in a season. I also told Michael, the number ten was smarter than you. I can’t change it now either. Hopefully, this is part of a moment from which we learn and become stronger,” the coach explained.
However, Olise’s dismissal was not the only issue troubling Kompany. The Belgian also questioned Bayern’s concentration after their recent domestic setback against Augsburg.
He believes the team has shown enough quality and effort, but repeated defensive errors have made their task harder. Bayern conceded early against both Augsburg and Viking, highlighting a worrying pattern that Kompany wants to address.
“The substance is not so bad, but there were total concentration errors. We were simply not smart. Not against Augsburg, when we conceded after eight seconds, and not today, when we also conceded an early goal after a minute and a half. It was also a bit of overconfidence. Every chance for the opponent is a goal, but that’s no excuse, we create those moments ourselves,” he said.
Bayern must now turn their attention to their upcoming Bundesliga clash with RB Leipzig. Kompany will expect a sharper performance as his side look to avoid further costly mistakes.
With the domestic title race gathering pace, Bayern need to restore their defensive focus and discipline. Kompany has made it clear that hard work alone will not be enough unless his players make smarter decisions on the pitch.
