Sporting Lagos head coach, Jeffery Buter, has been fined N500,000 and cautioned by the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) over comments he made concerning the league and match officials, Trybal News reports.

The sanction followed an inquest held on Wednesday into remarks made by Buter during a post-match press interview after Sporting Lagos’ Lagos Derby against Ikorodu City on September 30.

During the proceedings, Buter admitted that he was in error over the comments.

The NPFL panel subsequently imposed a N500,000 fine and warned the coach against making unsubstantiated public statements capable of undermining the league or its referees.

According to the panel, the relatively lenient sanction was influenced by Buter’s admission of wrongdoing and his limited experience as a coach in the NPFL.

The league also urged coaches and club officials to refrain from reckless public statements and instead use the league’s established dispute-resolution mechanisms to lodge complaints or seek redress.

Buter has been given seven working days to pay the fine, failing which he could face further sanctions.
