The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has overturned Edo Queens penalty-shootout victory over Ghanaian side Ampem Darkoa Ladies in the WAFU Zone B final and ordered the decisive match to be settled through extra time, Trybal News reports.
The decision was contained in a ruling dated September 26, 2026, by the CAF Organising Committee for Women’s Football, following a formal protest lodged by Ampem Darkoa over the procedure used to determine the winner of the September 5 final.
The match, played in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, ended 2-2 after 90 minutes before Edo Queens prevailed 4-1 on penalties. The Nigerian champions were subsequently declared WAFU Zone B champions.
However, CAF ruled that the penalty shootout should not have taken place immediately after regulation time.
Under the CAF Women’s Champions League regulations, a final that remains level after 90 minutes must proceed to two 15-minute periods of extra time, with a penalty shootout only used if the scores remain level after extra time.
CAF found that the failure to apply the required procedure resulted from an administrative error and stressed that neither Edo Queens nor Ampem Darkoa was responsible for the mistake.
According to the ruling, match officials were initially informed that extra time would be played if the final remained level. However, the referee was subsequently instructed to proceed directly to a penalty shootout after regulation time.
Ampem Darkoa challenged the decision, citing Articles 13.1 and 72.4 of the CAF Women’s Champions League Regulations.
CAF has now ordered the match to resume from the existing 2-2 scoreline, with the two teams playing the outstanding 30 minutes of extra time. Should the scores remain level after extra time, the winner will be determined by penalties.
The continuation will therefore not constitute a replay of the final. The original 90 minutes and the events recorded during that period will stand, while CAF has directed that the sporting conditions surrounding the continuation be maintained as far as practically possible.
WAFU Zone B is expected to determine the date, venue and kick-off time for the continuation in consultation with CAF and the two participating associations.
The ruling reopens a final that appeared to have been settled three weeks ago and leaves both Edo Queens and Ampem Darkoa with another opportunity to secure the WAFU Zone B title and the region’s qualification place for the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League final tournament.
