Taiwo Awoniyi endured a difficult afternoon as Coventry City suffered a heavy 5-0 defeat to Brighton on Sunday.
The result leaves Frank Lampard’s side rooted to the bottom of the Premier League after four straight defeats. Brighton, meanwhile, climbed into fourth place after securing their second win of the campaign.
Charalampos Kostoulas opened the scoring before Malick Yalcouye doubled Brighton’s advantage shortly after half time. The match then slipped further away from Coventry when Awoniyi received a red card for violent conduct.
Pascal Gross converted a penalty to make it 3-0. Lewis Dunk then produced a superb finish from distance before Yasin Ayari completed Brighton’s emphatic victory in stoppage time.
For Awoniyi, the afternoon ended in frustration. The Super Eagles striker started the match but could not prevent Coventry from suffering another painful Premier League defeat.
He managed one shot on goal and completed eight of his nine passes. The striker also recorded 16 touches and covered 4.9 kilometres, including six sprints, before his dismissal.
Coventry had shown some promise early in the match. Jay Dasilva found Jack Rudoni inside the Brighton area, and the midfielder’s cushioned volley forced an excellent save from Bart Verbruggen.
Verbruggen soon produced another important stop. Frank Onyeka cleverly lifted the ball for his own volley, but the Brighton goalkeeper reacted sharply to keep the effort out.
Awoniyi Red Card Turns Game Against Coventry
Brighton finally broke the deadlock in the 35th minute through Kostoulas. The teenage Greek striker showed excellent awareness as he nodded Gross’s pass beyond two Coventry defenders.
Kostoulas then turned quickly and fired a composed finish beyond Carl Rushworth. The goal gave Brighton the reward their pressure had demanded.
Coventry struggled to respond after the break. Just six minutes into the second half, Yalcouye raced away from the defence and finished clinically to give Brighton a 2-0 lead.
The situation became even worse for Lampard’s team two minutes later. Awoniyi was shown a red card after catching Maxim De Cuyper in the face with his elbow.
With Coventry down to 10 men, Brighton took complete control. The home side continued to attack and eventually won a penalty after Bobby Thomas fouled Kostoulas.
Gross stepped up in the 70th minute and calmly sent the ball past Rushworth. The penalty made it 3-0 and left Coventry with little hope of recovering.
Dunk added another stunning goal in the 83rd minute. The Brighton captain collected the ball around 25 yards from goal before curling a superb effort into the top corner.
Ayari then completed the rout during stoppage time. He kept his composure inside the area and guided a low strike beyond Rushworth to make it 5-0.
The defeat extends a miserable start for Coventry. Lampard’s team remain the only Premier League side without a point this season.
They are also still searching for their first Premier League goal since 2001 after failing to score in their opening four matches. Coventry only returned to the top flight last season after ending a 25 year absence from the Premier League.
Lampard admitted that the result was difficult to accept, although he felt his side competed well during the opening period.
“It’s a difficult scoreline, and it’s not easy at home,” Lampard said.
“The first half was pretty good; we created some chances and had them under a lot of pressure. Then a mistake to make it 2-0 and the red card makes it very difficult.
“We have to take responsibility. We did some good stuff, then the game became very, very difficult for us. We have to keep working.”
Brighton, on the other hand, can take plenty of confidence from the result. Fabian Hurzeler’s team secured their second victory of the season and moved into the top four.
Their latest success also ended a difficult spell after Brighton had gone without another league win since their impressive 4 to 0 victory over Aston Villa on the opening weekend.
Hurzeler urged his players to remain focused despite their strong position in the table.
“It’s important to stay humble and not take these things for granted,” Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler said.
For Coventry, the focus now turns to stopping the slide. Lampard needs his players to respond quickly, while Awoniyi will also face attention following his dismissal.
Brighton, meanwhile, leave the contest with confidence, five goals, three points and a place among the Premier League’s early top four.
