The first-ever top-flight Lagos derby between Inter Lagos and Sporting Lagos will headline Matchday 3 of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) as both newly promoted sides chase their first victory of the season, Trybal News reports.
The much-anticipated clash will take place at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Sunday, with the venue set to witness a new chapter in Lagos football.
There is little historical rivalry between the two clubs, but that is unlikely to diminish the intensity of a fixture that offers both sides the opportunity to claim the first bragging rights in their NPFL history.
Inter Lagos have endured a difficult start to life in the top flight, losing their opening two matches and scoring only once. Sporting Lagos also began the campaign with defeat, going down to Doma United.
Inter will take confidence from the clubs’ most recent meeting in the NNL Championship round, where Bashiru Hassan’s seventh-minute goal secured a 1-0 victory.
Elsewhere, Ranchers Bees will look to hat-trick hero Zulfililu Muhammad for another match-winning display when they travel to face FC Barau in Kano.
Muhammad became the first player to score a league hat-trick this season last weekend, inspiring Ranchers Bees to a 4-0 demolition of Abia Warriors. Both sides have recorded one win and one defeat from their opening two matches, although FC Barau boast an imposing home record, having won 11 of their last 13 matches at home.
Abia Warriors, meanwhile, will seek an immediate response when they face Ikorodu City at the Aba Stadium after their heavy defeat to Ranchers Bees.
The Oga Boys opened their campaign with a 3-1 victory over Ranchers Bees and will be targeting their first away win. The fixture will be played away from the Warriors’ traditional Umuahia base because of ongoing renovations.
At the Lafia City Stadium, Niger Tornadoes will attempt to extend their remarkable home unbeaten run to 15 matches when they welcome Plateau United.
The Ikon Allah suffered defeat to Kano Pillars last weekend but have not lost at home in their last 14 matches. Plateau United, however, will remember their previous trip to Niger Tornadoes fondly after recording a 4-0 victory, with Abdulaz Dalhatu scoring a hat-trick.
Kwara United and Katsina United will also battle for their first victories of the campaign. Kwara United earned a 2-2 draw against Kano Pillars in their previous home match before losing to Plateau United, while Katsina United’s last fixture was postponed because their scheduled opponents were involved in continental competition.
Kwara have dominated the recent home meetings between the sides, winning their last four encounters in Ilorin.
Meanwhile, Kun Khalifa face one of their toughest tests yet when they travel to Benin to meet Bendel Insurance.
The Owerri-based side remain unbeaten but are still searching for their first goal after consecutive 0-0 draws against Abia Warriors and FC Barau. Their defensive resilience will be tested by a Bendel Insurance side renowned for its strength at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.
With several clubs searching for their first wins and unbeaten runs on the line, Matchday 3 promises a weekend of significant early-season battles across the NPFL.
