Sunday’s CAF Confederation Cup action delivered mixed fortunes for North and Southern African giants, with Wydad AC and Kaizer Chiefs recording important victories, while Zamalek were frustrated at home.

Wydad continued their fine run in Group B by making it three straight wins after edging past DR Congo side Maniema Union 1-0 at the Stade Mohammed V. The Moroccan champions controlled large spells of the contest and were finally rewarded when Mohamed Moufid struck the decisive goal to secure all three points and maintain their strong position in the group.

In Cairo, Zamalek were held to a goalless draw by fellow Egyptian side Al Masry in a Group D clash at the Cairo International Stadium. Despite enjoying home advantage and creating a number of half chances, Zamalek could not find a breakthrough against a disciplined Al Masry defence. The result leaves Al Masry top of the group standings, with Zamalek sitting in second place as both teams continue their push for qualification.

Kaizer Chiefs claimed a narrow but valuable 1-0 away win over Zambian club ZESCO United at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola. Pule Mmodi scored the only goal of the match to hand the South African side all three points. Despite the victory, Chiefs remain third in Group D, but the result keeps their hopes alive as the group stage progresses.

In Group A, Olympic Safi boosted their qualification chances by defeating Ivorian side San Pedro 2-1 at the Laurent Pokou Stadium. Sofian El Moudane netted the winning goal for the Moroccan club, lifting them to second place in the standings. They now trail group leaders USM Alger by three points.

Elsewhere in Sunday’s CAF Confederation Cup fixtures, Nairobi United lost 2-1 at home to Azam FC, Singida Black Stars edged AS Otoho d’Oyo 1-0, and CR Belouizdad recorded a 2-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC.

The full list of results saw Nairobi United 1-2 Azam FC, ZESCO United 0-1 Kaizer Chiefs, San Pedro FC 1-2 Olympic Safi, Singida Black Stars 1-0 AS Otoho d’Oyo, CR Belouizdad 2-0 Stellenbosch FC, Wydad AC 1-0 Maniema Union, and Zamalek SC 0-0 Al Masry SC.
