Galatasaray head coach Okan Buruk believes his side deserved more after their 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in their UEFA Champions League league phase clash at Rams Park on Wednesday.
Speaking to UEFA after the match, Okan Buruk praised his players for their performance and effort, insisting they had done enough to win. He said: “We prepared very well for the match. Although we fell behind in the first half, we were able to respond immediately. We are a good team and we showed that tonight. Both teams fought very well. We could have won. But I congratulate all my players. They all fought very hard. We are also grateful to our fans. We always need them. Now we will focus on the Manchester City match and we will do our best.”
Atletico Madrid struck early, taking the lead in the fourth minute. Giuliano Simeone burst into the box and headed home a cross from Thiago Almada after Davinson Sánchez failed to deal with a delivery meant for Alexander Sorloth.
Galatasaray replied in the 20th minute when Roland Sallai sent a dangerous ball into the area from the right. Marcos Llorente, under pressure, attempted to clear but instead diverted the ball into his own net to hand the Turkish side the equaliser.
The result leaves Galatasaray 17th on the Champions League table. With Victor Osimhen club side needing a win in their final league phase match against Manchester City to keep control of their destiny and secure a place in the playoff round of the competition.
