Super Eagles right back Ryan Alebiosu featured for 90 minutes as Blackburn Rovers secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Preston North End at Ewood Park, boosting their fight for Championship survival.
The decisive moment came deep into stoppage time in what had largely been a tense and closely contested Lancashire derby. With the match heading towards a goalless draw, Japanese forward Yuki Ohashi, who had come off the bench, rose to head home from Eiran Cashin’s deep cross in the final minute of added time to hand Michael O’Neill a winning start in his first home game in charge.
Preston created limited clear cut opportunities but came closest to breaking the deadlock when Alfie Devine struck the woodwork twice. Despite those chances, the visitors managed only three shots throughout the contest and failed to capitalise on the opportunity to strengthen their position in the race for the play off spots.
The late winner lifts Blackburn to 19th place on 38 points, moving them four points clear of the relegation zone and giving them breathing space ahead of the remaining fixtures. The result also adds pressure on the teams below them as the battle to avoid the drop intensifies.
Ryan Alebiosu delivered a disciplined performance at right back, completing 19 of his 22 passes and recording 50 touches. He also made three recoveries and won four of his five ground duels, contributing defensively as Blackburn held firm to claim a vital three points.
