Rivers United suffered a damaging setback in their CAF Champions League campaign after a surprise 1-0 defeat to Zambia’s Power Dynamos on Sunday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo. The loss leaves the Nigeria Premier Football League leaders rooted to the bottom of Group A with their hopes of progression hanging by a thread.
Having earned a goalless draw in the reverse fixture in Ndola, Rivers United entered the match knowing only a victory would keep their qualification ambitions alive. Despite enjoying early possession and territorial dominance, the Pride of Rivers were unable to turn control into clear-cut chances against a disciplined Dynamos side.
Head coach Finidi George was forced into changes following Ogechukwu Ogbe’s injury, pairing Stephen Manyo with Boluwaji Sholumade in central defence. Duke Osimaga came into midfield alongside Wasiu Falolu, while former Enyimba striker Chijioke Mbaoma led the attack. Rivers United pressed from the outset but struggled to break down a resolute Dynamos backline marshalled by former Shooting Stars defender Ayodeji Bamidele, and the first half ended scoreless.
The visitors returned from the break with greater urgency and were rewarded just five minutes into the second half. Kondwani Chiboni met a low cross from the right and finished smartly at the near post, beating goalkeeper Osagie Onisodumeya to stun the home side.
Rivers United pushed for an equaliser but lacked the cutting edge needed to restore parity, with Dynamos defending deeply and effectively to protect their advantage. The defeat compounded earlier frustrations for the Nigerian champions, who were also held at home by RS Berkane in a result that has continued to undermine their group stage campaign.
With four matches played, Rivers United remain bottom of Group A with just one point. Pyramids FC lead the standings on 10 points after a convincing win over RS Berkane, who sit second with seven points. Power Dynamos move up to third with four points, leaving Rivers United facing an uphill battle to stay in the competition.
