Hamburger SV have boosted their attacking lineup with the arrival of Nigerian winger Philip Otele, who has joined the German club on loan from FC Basel until the end of the season.

The 26-year-old forward, set to wear the number 27 shirt, becomes one of the club’s winter additions as they look to improve depth in the final third.

Sporting director Claus Costa is confident the Nigerian will bring quality to the squad, describing his attributes in glowing terms.

Philip is a winger in the purest sense. He brings flair and a real goal threat, plays with courage on the ball and often looks to take defenders on and drive directly towards goal with his dribbling. He’s also fully fit and has been playing regular football recently,” Costa said. “Philip has taken a unique path in his career and had to work hard for every step. He’s now really looking forward to his next challenge in the Bundesliga, and we’re delighted that he’s chosen HSV.”

Born in Port Harcourt, Otele started his football journey in England before featuring professionally in Lithuania, Romania and the United Arab Emirates. He moved to Basel last year and went on to contribute 18 goals and eight assists in 53 appearances. This season, he has already recorded 13 goal involvements in 32 matches, highlighting his attacking consistency.

Speaking after completing the switch, the winger described the transfer as a proud moment and expressed eagerness to begin his new chapter, pointing to the club’s stature and passionate support as major motivations.

The temporary move is expected to give Otele the platform to maintain his momentum while providing Hamburg with another attacking option for the remainder of the campaign.
