Super Eagles forward Peter Olayinka was the match winner as APOEL FC secured a hard fought 1-0 victory over city rivals AC Omonia in the Nicosia derby of the Cypriot First Division on Sunday.

The high profile encounter carried significant pride for both sides. While league leaders Omonia were focused on maintaining their position at the summit, APOEL were determined to claim local bragging rights and strengthen their push up the table. The opening half was competitive, with both teams creating promising situations, but neither side managed to break the deadlock before the interval.

The contest remained finely balanced deep into the second half until Olayinka produced the decisive moment. The Nigerian, who joined APOEL during the winter transfer window after his contract with Red Star Belgrade expired, capitalised on hesitation in the Omonia defence in the 81st minute. After the visitors failed to clear their lines, Peter Olayinka reacted quickly inside the box and fired the ball into the net to seal the victory.

The goal was his first for APOEL since arriving as a free agent and came in only his second appearance for the club, underlining his immediate impact. The strike secured APOEL’s 11th league win of the season and lifted them above Aris Limassol into fifth place with 39 points from 23 matches.

Despite the defeat, Omonia remain top of the table with 54 points from the same number of games, six points clear of second placed Apollon. APOEL will aim to build on the derby success when they take on seventh placed AEL Limassol in their next league fixture.
