Mozambique captain Elias Dominguez Pelembe has officially confirmed his retirement from international football, bringing an emotional end to a distinguished career that spanned more than two decades, following the Mambas exit from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The veteran midfielder made his final appearance for the national team on Monday in Fez, as Mozambique suffered a 4–0 defeat to Nigeria’s Super Eagles, a result that sealed their elimination from the tournament and closed the curtain on Pelembe’s time in national colours.
In a heartfelt message shared on his social media page, Pelembe reflected on a journey that began 42 years ago and included 22 spells of service with the national team, describing it as a cycle that shaped both his life as an athlete and his identity as a citizen.
Wearing the national team jersey is one of the greatest honours and the fulfilment of a dream we all carry, Pelembe wrote. In every camp, every match and every minute on the pitch, I always tried to give the best of myself, represent my country with dignity and respect those who believed in me throughout this long journey.
He also paid tribute to the sacrifices and challenges that defined his career, crediting discipline, resilience and an unwavering love for Mozambique as the driving forces behind his longevity.
It was a long journey, not always easy, he added. But I leave with the peace of mind of someone who gave everything, both on and off the pitch.
As he steps away from international football, Elias Dominguez Pelembe departs as one of Mozambique’s most revered football figures, leaving behind a legacy built on service, leadership and an enduring bond with the nation and its people.
