Ola Aina delivered an industrious performance from wing-back as Nottingham Forest battled to a dramatic 2-2 draw against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
City, who came into the contest with 16 wins from their last 19 home league matches, dominated possession early on and eventually went ahead in the 31st minute when Antoine Semenyo volleyed home from Rayan Cherki’s inviting delivery. Pep Guardiola’s men looked in control before the break, but Forest stayed within touching distance despite late pressure from Erling Haaland and company.
Operating as a right wing-back, Aina combined defensive discipline with attacking intent throughout the encounter. He was heavily involved in Forest’s attacking build-up and played a decisive role in the equaliser. His well-delivered cross into the area was nodded back by Igor Jesus into the path of Morgan Gibbs-White, who produced an audacious backheel finish through Rúben Dias’ legs and beyond Gianluigi Donnarumma to bring Forest level.
City responded swiftly, with Rodri restoring their lead just six minutes later, but Forest refused to retreat. Elliot Anderson’s superb curling effort after a neat exchange with Callum Hudson-Odoi ensured the visitors twice came from behind to earn a valuable point in their fight to stay clear of the relegation zone.
Aina’s numbers underlined his all-action display. The Super Eagles defender registered 39 touches and completed 12 of his 17 passes, while contributing seven defensive actions. He won all three of his tackles, claimed five ground duels, and secured one aerial duel in a disciplined showing on both ends of the pitch.
The result leaves City seven points adrift of title rivals Arsenal, albeit with a game in hand, while Forest remain just outside the drop zone on goal difference after a spirited performance inspired in part by Aina’s impact down the flank.
