The National Sports Commission (NSC) has celebrated former D’Tigress captain Sarah Ogoke following her decision to retire from international basketball at the age of 35.

Ogoke officially announced her departure from the national team in Lyon, France, on Monday, in a colourful ceremony attended by teammates and organised by Xejet, a partner of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team.

NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko praised Ogoke for her commitment and long-standing service, noting that the nation remains proud of her contributions spanning over a decade. He added that Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu also recognise her impact, particularly in inspiring women and young girls through her resilience and achievements both on and off the court.

Dikko, who attended the event in Lyon, commended the Nigeria Basketball Federation and its partners for organising a befitting send-off. He also highlighted that Ogoke’s retirement comes at a time when Nigerian athletes are receiving increased support and recognition, including national honours.

Director General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, described Ogoke as a standout figure in Nigerian basketball whose journey exemplifies excellence. He noted that her ability to combine a successful sporting career with her profession as a medical doctor and her family life sets a strong example for aspiring athletes.

Ogoke leaves the national team as one of its most decorated players, having played a key role in Nigeria’s dominance on the continent, including multiple AfroBasket triumphs since 2017.

Beyond basketball, she steps away as a fulfilled professional and family woman, marking the end of a remarkable chapter with D’Tigress.

The team will look to honour her legacy with a victory against Germany in their final game at the FIBA Women’s World Cup qualifying tournament in Lyon.
