The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, has been named Sports Administrator of the Year at the New Telegraph Awards, a recognition that underscores his growing impact on sports development and governance across Nigeria.

Held on Friday, the ceremony celebrated outstanding performers in various sectors, with Olopade singled out for his progressive leadership style, policy-driven reforms, and unwavering commitment to strengthening the nation’s sporting framework.

Before his current appointment, Olopade built a solid reputation during his two tenures as Sports Commissioner in Ogun State. There, he championed grassroots programmes, nurtured emerging talents, and implemented structural changes that improved the state’s sporting competitiveness.

His advocacy for inclusive sports also stood out during his time as President of the Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball Federation, where he pushed initiatives aimed at expanding opportunities for athletes with disabilities and elevating para-sports nationwide.

Olopade’s administrative experience extends to league management, having served as Chief Operating Officer of the Nigeria National League, where he contributed to enhanced operational processes and organisational stability.

In the private sector, he led Nilayo Sports Management Limited as Chief Executive Officer, successfully delivering internationally recognised events that projected Nigeria onto the global sporting map.

Working closely with the Commission’s chairman, Shehu Dikko, Olopade’s tenure has been associated with renewed stakeholder confidence, improved collaboration, and a clearer strategic direction for Nigerian sports.

The award further cements his standing as a forward-thinking administrator dedicated to driving sustainable growth while positioning Nigeria for stronger continental and international relevance.
